Last updated: March 2026 β’ 6 min read
Booking the Life in the UK test is straightforward once you know the steps, but there are a few things to get right β especially around accepted ID, cancellation windows, and choosing your test centre. This guide walks you through the entire process from start to finish.
The test costs Β£50 and is booked online through the official GOV.UK website. There are more than 60 test centres across the UK, so most people can find one within reasonable travelling distance.
Eligibility β Before You Book
Not everyone needs to take the test. Before booking, check that you actually need it for your immigration application:
- β’You must be 18 or over to book the test
- β’You need the test for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship (naturalisation) β it is not required for initial visa applications
- β’You must have a valid passport or biometric residence permit (BRP) to bring on the day β no other ID is accepted
- β’You must be resident in the UK at the time of booking β you cannot sit the test from overseas
Note: Some people are exempt from the test β for example, those aged 65 or over, and people with certain long-term physical or mental conditions. Check the GOV.UK Life in the UK test page for the current list of exemptions.
Step-by-Step: How to Book
- 1
Go to the official booking site
Visit gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test and click βBook the Life in the UK testβ. Do not use third-party booking sites β only the official GOV.UK site is authorised.
- 2
Create or sign in to your account
You will need to create a Government Gateway account or sign in if you already have one. This is the same account used for other government services. Your personal details must match your photo ID exactly.
- 3
Choose a test centre
Enter your postcode to find nearby test centres. There are over 60 centres across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Centres are typically located in city and town centres, and many are operated by Pearson VUE.
- 4
Select a date and time
Available slots are shown for your chosen centre. Appointments are typically available Monday to Saturday during business hours. Slots can fill up quickly in busier cities, so book as far ahead as you can if you have a fixed deadline.
- 5
Pay the Β£50 fee
Pay by debit or credit card. The fee is non-refundable if you cancel within 3 clear working days of the test or fail to attend. Keep your booking confirmation email β you will need your booking reference number on the day.
What ID Do You Need?
You must bring one piece of acceptable photo ID to the test centre. This must be:
- β’A valid passport (any nationality)
- β’A biometric residence permit (BRP)
UK or foreign driving licences, bank cards, and other forms of ID are not accepted. The name on your ID must match the name on your booking exactly β if they differ, you may be turned away and lose your fee.
On the Day
- β’Arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes before your appointment
- β’You will be asked to show your ID and sign in at reception
- β’No electronic devices are permitted in the testing room β phones, smart watches, and tablets must be left in a locker
- β’You will be shown to a computer workstation and given instructions before the test begins
- β’The test is 24 questions in 45 minutes β you need 18 correct (75%) to pass
- β’Your result is displayed on screen immediately after you finish
- β’If you pass, your pass notification is sent digitally β check the email address on your booking account
Cancellation and Rescheduling
Life happens β here is what you need to know if you need to change your booking:
- β’You can cancel or reschedule for free if you do so at least 3 clear working days before your test date
- β’If you cancel within 3 working days or do not attend, you will lose your Β£50 fee
- β’If you fail the test, you must wait at least 7 days before rebooking and pay the full Β£50 fee again
- β’There is no limit on the number of times you can sit the test
Accessibility and Special Requirements
Adjustments are available for candidates with disabilities or specific needs:
- β’Extra time is available for candidates with certain learning difficulties or disabilities β request this when booking
- β’A British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter can be arranged in advance β contact the test centre directly
- β’The test can be taken with screen reader software at some centres β check availability when booking
Contact the test centre in advance if you have any accessibility requirements to ensure they can be accommodated.
